Lilting Latin flavored rock with the feel of a real band. Latin GRAMMY-nominated Tren a Marte ("Train To Mars") is an excellent 7-piece band run by brothers and twin lead vocalists Alan and Edgar García.
This session was recorded at TEC university's recording studio in Mexico City. The studio may not have boasted vintage Neumanns and Telefunkens but it was ably equipped and has a decent sized live room.
Aside from being an excellent and well-performed song, Yo Quiero features solo strings (violin and cello) and some unusual mic choices such as the Miktek C5, and a Rode NTR ribbon that was used on one of the twin lead vocals. The song, written and performed in Spanish ("I Want To..." for non Spanish speakers), also offers an interesting look into Latin rock material for those unfamiliar with the genre.
One area of particular interest is the lead vocal. For a start there are two lead vocals: one each by the brothers Garcia. Not only does this pose challenges in terms of tone and treatment (Alan found it tough to create much distinction between the two), with this type of song the intimacy and emotion of the lead vocal is of paramount importance.
A simple and appealing song that provides the mixer or remixer with some unusual challenges and rewards.
